James Novosel founded the Bay Architects in 1980 to serve East Bay clients with
their residential and commercial projects.
After graduating from the School of Architecture at the University of
California, Berkeley, in 1971, he apprenticed at several large San Francisco
firms including Escherick, Homsey, Dodge and Davis (EHDD), Hellmuth, Obata and
Kasselbaum (HOK) and Hall, Goodhue, Haisley and Barker (HGHB). Planning and
architectural work included multi-family, institutional and commercial buildings
with an emphasis on Type V construction. Bay Area projects include space
planning the Manual Wiley Courthouse in Oakland, rehabilitation of several
college of Marin buildings and multi-family apartments.
Mr. Novosel has been intimately involved in the
Bay Architects’ work that has help create over 260 multi-family units in
Berkeley alone over the past 15 years. These building projects range in size
from 72 to 4 units and from 5 to 2 stories. The firm is proficient in the
detailed construction drawings and building code understanding of Type V
Construction and CBC 2007 R-2 Occupancies.
ADA
compliance studies and design/construction projects for various
Berkeley
multi-family housing developments and remodeling residential building code and
life safety upgrades including ADA compliance.
There are two items that are
of particular note for our firm’s Gonaway Commons project proposal.
First, Campanile Hotel
rehabilitation. Eighty year old SRO rehabilitated into apartments. Complete
interior demolition and structural strengthening with exiting and accessibility
upgrades. Along with new building at its rear. Total of 34 units created.
Second is his involvement
with Rebuilding Together (formerly Xmas in April). Ten years inspecting and
programming and drawing improvements to single family homes for mostly elderly
residents who desire to continue to live in their homes that need accessibility
improvements to bathrooms, kitchens and entries. Jim Novosel, have performed a
significant amount of community and private property code inspections,
identified and conceptualized solutions to building code life safety
deficiencies and composed construction drawings for building permits to solve
those code deficiencies. Community service with Rebuilding Together (formerly
Christmas in April). Contact person; Mike McDowell, Board President. Provided
since 1997, building inspection and drawings to outline work and obtain permits
for correcting deficiencies in single family homes and institutions in Berkeley,
Albany and Emeryville. Involved touring buildings, assessing deficiencies,
quick sketches to outline construction solutions and applying for building
permits. Special consideration is given to meeting ADA requirements for the
users. Institutional inspections included East Bay Center for the Blind, Emery
High School and the Bay Area Alternate Press.
