James Novosel founded the Bay Architects in 1980 to serve East Bay clients with their residential and commercial projects.

After graduating from the School of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1971, he apprenticed at several large San Francisco firms including Escherick, Homsey, Dodge and Davis (EHDD), Hellmuth, Obata and Kasselbaum (HOK) and Hall, Goodhue, Haisley and Barker (HGHB). Planning and architectural work included multi-family, institutional and commercial buildings with an emphasis on Type V construction. Bay Area projects include space planning the Manual Wiley Courthouse in Oakland, rehabilitation of several college of Marin buildings and multi-family apartments.

Mr. Novosel has been intimately involved in the Bay Architects’ work that has help create over 260 multi-family units in Berkeley alone over the past 15 years. These building projects range in size from 72 to 4 units and from 5 to 2 stories. The firm is proficient in the detailed construction drawings and building code understanding of Type V Construction and CBC 2007 R-2 Occupancies.

First, Campanile Hotel rehabilitation. Eighty year old SRO rehabilitated into apartments. Complete interior demolition and structural strengthening with exiting and accessibility upgrades. Along with new building at its rear. Total of 34 units created.

Second is his involvement with Rebuilding Together (formerly Xmas in April). Ten years inspecting and programming and drawing improvements to single family homes for mostly elderly residents who desire to continue to live in their homes that need accessibility improvements to bathrooms, kitchens and entries. Jim Novosel, have performed a significant amount of community and private property code inspections, identified and conceptualized solutions to building code life safety deficiencies and composed construction drawings for building permits to solve those code deficiencies. Community service with Rebuilding Together (formerly Christmas in April). Contact person; Mike McDowell, Board President. Provided since 1997, building inspection and drawings to outline work and obtain permits for correcting deficiencies in single family homes and institutions in Berkeley, Albany and Emeryville.  Involved touring buildings, assessing deficiencies, quick sketches to outline construction solutions and applying for building permits.  Special consideration is given to meeting ADA requirements for the users. Institutional inspections included East Bay Center for the Blind, Emery High School and the Bay Area Alternate Press.
